page 33-41

Synopsis...

Nick takes in all the sights and sounds of Tom and Myrtle's party. Here he sees first hand the depth of the rumours and innuendo that swirl around the members of this so-called "secret society". Catherine notes that Gatsby is "a nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm" (35), going on to claim that much of Gatsby's wealth found its origin in Germany. This claim would hardly seem a compliment in the 1920s, shortly after the end of the Great War.

Later, Catherine reveals that neither Tom nor Daisy can "stand the person they're married to" (35), stating later that it is Daisy who is stalling the inevitable divorce due to her "Catholicism" (36). Nick is struck by the brash inaccuracy of this reasoning.

However, it is the words of Myrtle Wilson that seem most powerful in this section. On pages 36-37, Myrtle discusses her marriage. Shockingly, Myrtle is not at all regretful, and seems to blame her husband for his cuckoldry.

The party comes to an inglorious end after Tom physically abuses his girlfriend, breaking her "nose with his open hand" (39), an act that is only exacerbated by the uninterested, hapless reaction of his guests.

Themes...

The first sections of the novel introduce some of the central themes in the novel. These motifs include the significance of rumours and gossip; vanity and conceit; deceit; and the social hierarchy.

Tasks...

  1. Describe the circumstances surrounding the end of Tom and Myrtle's party.
  2. Explain Myrtle's justification (sorry Sam)for cheating on her husband.
  3. Choose one of the themes indicated in this section. Describe how this theme is presented in the novel thus far. What ideas does the novel develop regarding your chosen theme.
  4. Examine the poem below, what is the theme of the poem?
  5. Individually, compose a paragraph that details how the poem can be related to the novel thus far. Be sure to utilize specific reference to both sources.

The City of Yes and the City of No
Y. Yevtushenko

I am like a train
rushing for many years now
between the city of Yes
and the city of No.
My nerves are strained
like wires
between the city of No
and the city of Yes
Everything is deadly.
everyone frightened.
In the city of No
It’s like a study furnished with dejections.
Every morning its parquet floors are polished with bile.
It’s sofas are made of falsehood, it’s walls of misfortune.
Every portrait looks out suspiciously.
Every portrait looks out suspiciously.
Every object is frowning, withholding something
You’ll get lots of good advice in it- like hell you will!-
Neither a bunch of flowers nor even a greeting.
Typewriters chatter a carbon-copy answer.
“No-no-no…
No-no-no…
No-no-no”
And when the lights go out altogether
the ghosts in it begin their gloomy ballet
You’ll get a ticket to leave-
Like hell you will!-
to leave
the black town of No
But in the town of Yes-life’s like the song of a thrush.
This town’s without walls- just like a nest.
The sky is asking you to take any star you like in your hand.
Lips ask for yours, without any shame,
softly murmuring. “Ah- all that nonsense…”-
and daisies, teasing, are asking to be picked,
and lowing herds are offering their milk,
and in no one is there even a trace of suspicious,
and wherever you want to be, you are instantly there,
taking any train, or plane, or ship that you like.
And water, faintly murmuring, whispers through the years.
“Yes-yes-yes…
Yes-yes-yes…
Yes-yes-yes…”
Only to tell the truth, it’s a bit boring, at times,
to be given so much, almost without any effort,
In that shining multicoloured city of Yes…

- - -

Better let me be tossed around
To the end of my days.
between the city of Yes
And the city of No!
Let my nerves be strained
like wires
between the city of No
and the city of Yes!

1)The party is ended abruptly by Tom hitting Myrtles in the face and breaking her nose. Myrtle was treating him like she treats her husband so Tom had his spontaneous reaction of keeping the upper hand. Myrtle says to Tom “I’ll say it whenever I want to! Daisy!” This quotation shows how Myrtle is also trying to compete for the power however; Tom’s character will not allow himself to be treated with such disrespect. Tom cannot stand Daisy however he cannot inflict any harm on her because she is part of the upper class, so whenever Myrtle treats him with lack of respect he can treat her belligerently because it will not really affect anyone in the long run.

2)Myrtles justification for cheating on her husband is that he is not the “gentleman” which she expected him to be. The line that shows this is “he borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in”. Myrtle was expecting to marry someone who was rich and was respected in society. Not someone who “borrowed” somebody’s suit for the wedding. This is why Myrtle would have an affair with someone like Tom who had money and was part of this “secret society”, unlike George who has no money and is just a low mechanic.

3)Rumors and Gossip are present throughout the first section in the way they base there assumption about people from what they have heard. "a nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm" (35) This shows that they don’t even know who he is but they are creating rumors of where he is from and where his wealth has originated. Another example of this is “It’s really his wife that’s keeping them apart. She’s a Catholic, and they don’t believe in divorce.” This shows they are creating rumours that they might know are true but could be lies. They create these rumours that just so that they can feel that they are part “secret society”.

1. It is quite clear that the end of the party resulted from Tom’s abusive nature taking hold of his temper. He enters into an argument with Myrtle when “Daisy” –Tom’s wife- is mentioned. This argument “I’ll say it when ever I want to Daisy, Daisy, Dai-“ (39) reflects the need Tom has to control those in his life through fear. After Myrtle expresses her frustrations to her lover, he hits her “with his open hand” (39) There is no love her, and there is no joy, thus the party was over.

2. Mrs. Wilson is not a lady of class; she blames her husband, George for this. Myrtle seems to be a “social climber” as she talks about being frivolous with her money “I just slip it on sometimes when I don’t care what I look like” (33) From this quotation it can be said that she is someone who searches for recognition, but wants be seen as modest. Her reason for having an affair is justified by George’s lack of “Title” and wealth. “I married him because I thought he was a gentlemen…I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe” (37) this quote shows that she hates him for his modest living.

3. The significance of rumours and gossip plague the mind in this novel, and can control the behaviours of others. This can be demonstrated by the Tom’s lie that Catherine states Daisy won’t divorce him because she believes in “Catholicism” (36). We discover from Nick’s point of view that Daisy has never been catholic proving that Tom is just full of it. Gossip is further discussed when Nick is asked about an engagement that was rumoured to have happened, “I forgot to ask you something, and it’s important. We heard you were engaged to a girl out West” this is not of any importance, which shows Nick what values the aristocrats in this novel hold near and dear to their hearts.

1. At the end of Toms and Myrtle's party Tom punches Myrtle in the face for saying Daisy's name. This scene ends in mayhem and Nick and Mr. McKee leave in a hurry.
2. Myrtle’s justification for cheating on her husband is because in her eyes he is not a gentleman and that he cannot support her with money. This is explained in the line “He wasn’t fit to lick my shoe.” This quote tells us that Myrtle believes that her husband is not rich enough for her and that he can not give her everything that she need. By saying this quote it shows us that Myrtle wants a man that was respond to her every demand.
3. The theme of deceit is strongly shown in the novel thus far. Deceit is shown through the relationships that the characters have with each other. From what we have read of the novel we can see that all the marriages and the social portrayals of the characters are all lies. From the beginning of the book we see the deceit that Tom has with Daisy and that Myrtle also has with her current husband. This deceit is shown in the line “Neither of them can stand the person they are married to.” This quote shows that both of their marriages are lies. Both of the relationships, Tom and Daisy and Myrtle and her husband are based on deceit because they can’t stand the person they are married to and are openly cheating on their husband or wife. We see deceit through the way that Tom and Myrtle betray their relationships with their husband and wife. As we can see deceit is clearly displayed thus far in the novel.

Marc and Arie (1-3)

1. At the end of the party Tom was trying to demonstrate his supremacy and has just struck Myrtle, she is bleeding profusely. All of the other ladies are trying to console her. However the party attendees should be talking to Tom about belligerent behavior, but they are just leaving, and ignoring what is happening. Nick just left with Mr. Mckee and they are riding down in the elevator. Nick has fallen asleep at the train station.
2. Myrtle justification for cheating on her husband is that he is not high enough or rich enough for her. This becomes apparent when she states “I married him because I thought he was a gentlemen”. When she says “gentlemen” she is not referring to the way that he acts but to his place in society she believes that she deserves someone with more money and power.
3. The theme which is shown the most is the theme of deceit because they all talk about things they know nothing of. When Catherine says “Well, they say he’s a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm’s. That’s were all of his money comes from”. They are making up stories that they do not know if it is true or not because all they have as truth is the tails of others in there society. These people lie about the most obscure actions because they have no integrity or honor for the people around them. This means that they have a very low perception of others around them and every piece of gossip that passes through this room they will openly accept as truth.

1) Describe the circumstances surrounding the end of Tom and Myrtle's party.
The circumstances surrounding the end of Tom and Myrtle’s party involve Myrtle trying to put her power she has over George Wilson onto Tom. ““Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” Shouted Mrs. Wilson. “I’ll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai-”” Myrtle is trying to become dominant over Tom, and in an act of impulsive hostility, Tom struck Myrtle across the face with an open hand, breaking her nose. Tom can not handle anyone trying to place their power over him, and being violent is his way of solving the problem. This also reflects Tom’s hatred toward Daisy, except that he can not hurt Daisy because she is part of the high-class society, and the higher society would find out about it. Myrtle is not part of the high-class society, and therefore Tom feels justified to hurt her because she can not do anything about it.

2) Explain Myrtle's justification for cheating on her husband.
Myrtle justifies her cheating on her husband because “he borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in, and never even told me about it, and then the man came after it one day when he was out”. She believes that George cheated on her first, by pretending to be a “Gentleman”, or rather, part of the high-class society. However, it turned out George was not wealthy at all, had not told her, and dragged her into his life. This allows Myrtle to be “justified” in cheating on George, because he cheated first by using “another mans best suit” to get married in, which is very dishonest about his ranking in society. By cheating on George with Tom, Myrtle feels she has entered the high-class society, where she should have belonged in the first place, except George ruined that for her.

3) Choose one of the themes indicated in this section. Describe how this theme is presented in the novel thus far. What ideas does the novel develop regarding your chosen theme.
The novel develops many ideas about rumours and gossip. It brings forth the idea that gossip develops in many levels of society. For example, in the social hierarchy that Myrtle falls into, everyone she knows only spreads rumours and gossip from someone else they heard. For example, when Catherine prominently says “Tom can not divorce his wife because she is Catholic”, Nick realizes that this group of people is just lies and gossip. Nick knows Daisy is not Catholic, but Catherine spreads the rumour like it is pure truth, because Tom has told her this. Rumours also exist in the high-class society. When Nick is over at Tom and Daisy’s house, they mention that they “heard you [Nick] were engaged.” Nick, however, has not been revealed to be engaged at this point in the story. This shows that even people in very high-class formulate many rumours about people they hardly even know, thriving in their lies.

Byron and Pierre;

1. The situation at the end of the party is when Tom belligerently punched Myrtle “Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand” (pg.39) the expected response for an outburst like this, in the 21st century would be to either get the man to leave, beat him up or comfort the one he punched. However, because everyone is shallow and wishes to appear higher and better than they are, they all overlooked the situation. The women did go to the aid of Myrtle but Tom merely shrugged it off as did everyone else.

2. Myrtle married her husband because she thought he was a “gentleman”. “I knew right away I made a mistake” she disdainfully explains about her marriage. She goes on to say that she found out her husband had borrowed a friend’s “best suit” for their wedding. A “gentleman”, in the time period this story is set in, was considered to be prosperous and acquiring many great amenities. Her newlywed husband could not even afford to buy himself a suit for their wedding so therefore he was not to be a proper “gentleman” in her eyes. This is why she would cheat on him with Tom who is very prosperous and can afford many amenities. Tom is everything she wanted her husband to be from the start of their marriage which is a “gentleman”.

3. Rumors and gossip is a major motif throughout the first few chapters of the story. For the few people who have crossed paths with Nick and have mentioned Mr. Gatsby, all say a rumor and more so a lie "a nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm" (35) Catherine speaks to Nick that Mr. Gatsby is a relative of Kaiser Wilhelm, the man who is responsible for WWI. Catherine also states that Mr. Gatsby got all his wealth from Germany. Obviously, this is a lie and cannot make sense. Mr. Gatsby is looked upon as a celebrity. Because the people do not know him, they make horrible assumptions about him. This is how the social atmosphere is where ever Nick goes, everyone has a story about anyone, whether it is true or not.

4) The theme of the poem “The City of Yes and No” is that we need diversity in our lives. In “The City of No”, everything is devious, sinister and “polished with bile”. On top of this, the lives of all the citizens in “The City of No” are lives that are in fear. Everyone is out to backstab everything for their own personal gain. The lines “Every portrait looks out suspiciously” conveys this idea, because if you were not living a lie, there would be no need to be suspicious of everyone looking at you. On the other hand, you would gain knowledge from “The City of No”, by never letting anyone be able to take advantage of you, but you would almost end up being a social outcast. However, in “The City of Yes”, things aren’t much better. Granted, you have everything given to you, and everyone is true, however, everyone would also be very naïve. Not only is “it a bit boring at times”, if someone from “The City of No” visited “The City of Yes”, they could completely take advantage of everyone there by stealing, being malicious and going around with scornful intents. Therefore, we would need diversity in our lives. We should not be “social outcasts polished in bile”, nor should we be completely “boring at times”. If you transferred between both these cities, learning the positives of both, you would be able to be true, while never letting anyone take advantage of you.

5) The poem “The City of Yes and No” relates to the novel “The Great Gatsby” in a sense that there are very true people, and extremely selfish, contemptuous people. In “The Great Gatsby”, people like Tom would fall into “The City of No”. Tom is very dishonorable, and this is displayed when he “drags me [Nick] along as if I had nothing better to do” to spend time with Myrtle, who he is cheating on his wife with. First of all, this shows Tom as being supercilious for thinking Nick has nothing better to do, and showing no integrity for Daisy, since he is cheating on her with Myrtle. Generally, all the people Tom ends up hanging around with so far into this story are in “The City of No”, only out for themselves, such as (but not including Nick) the people at Myrtle’s party. However, some people also fall into “The City of Yes”. George, Myrtle’s husband, is a character which can fall into this category because he is “Naïve” in the sense that he has no possible power in his marriage because he is very submissive to his wife, who happens to be dominant. When Myrtle brings up the point that “George is not a gentlemen. He borrowed someone else’s best suit to get married in”, we can see that George was trying to impress and be kind to Myrtle. If George did not care about her, he would not have spent time looking for someone to borrow a suit from for their wedding.

1. Opportunity and inheritance come to mind with this poem “The City of Yes and the City of No”. The author speaks of the limited chances one has to succeed in the “City of No”, because “It’s like a study furnished with dejections.” There is no room for prosperity, and you know right off that you will never get to live the way the people in “yes” live. In the other City, the “City of Yes” everything is handed to you, and there is no room for “no”. You can live out your wildest dreams and, “wherever you want to be, you are instantly there”. Here there is a sense of fulfilling your wildest wants. The people who are stuck “between the city of No and the city of Yes” feel that “Everything is deadly...Everyone frightened” They would represent the people who were born in the “City of No” the ones that tried to use the only opportunities given to be in the “City of Yes” here in the middle “Everything is deadly”, because they no longer fit in either city.

2. Great Gatsby is a slight parallel to the poem, as it shows the struggle of obtaining the American Dream –an idea that shapes this novel-. The “City of No” represents those who are not able to break through, and becomes like the aristocrats who were born into their world of money and social hierarchy. They can not enter the Secret Society, and are not allowed in the “City of Yes”, but there is a glimmer of hope that certain individuals find. Those who are caught in-between both cities feel that “Everything is deadly” This is shown in the novel by the way Gatsby is talked about by the aristocratic society. Although he has gotten his chance to be like the elite, he will never truly fit in. The poem reflects this notion with the line “ticket to leave-Like hell you will!-to leave the black town of No” there is no opportunity to prosper in the rich man’s world when old money will never allow new money to grow.

1) The fifth guest is the anonymous person who called on the phone for Tom. This made the rest of the evening very awkward and uncomfortable. It also shows to us that tom and Daisies relationship is very poor and niether of the two are satisfied with what they have.

Nick notes that the "fifth guest" who interrupted the party was the woman "Tom had in New York" that he was cheating on Daisy with. This woman had phoned their house during the party, and Tom answered it. This reveals to us that the marriage between Tom and Daisy is very unreal. Everyone knows that Tom is cheating on Daisy, and Tom even answers the phone when Daisy is around, in front of guests, as if he doesn't even care about Daisy at all.

Daisy states she is "cynical" about the world around her. This pessimism is reflected in her efforts to parent her child because she wept when she found she had given birth to a daughter. She knows that her daughter could be intelligent, and she will feel the pain Daisy has in her life, because she is always been put down, and knows she is being put down. If she had given birth to a son, she would not have been so cynical because her son would not have to be put down constantly. Her marriage to Tom does not help this outlook because Tom is always putting her down so he can gain the power in their marriage. By constantly being put down, she will always have a low self-esteem and hate the world around her.

1) the "fifth geust" who disrputs the festivities is Toms mistress who lives in New York. This reveals to us that Daisy's and Tom's marrige is a sham and is not working very well.

2) Daisy's "cynical" about raising her daughter is that her daughter will never be taken seriously only because she is a girl. In their high society, men are considered better and more knowlagable, even when woman, Daisy has proven to have been more inteligent than her husband. Her marrige to Tom affects this paradigm becasue even though she is has a vastly larger intellegence and more knowlage, Tom will be listened to first and people will generally not listen to what Daisy has to say.

1. This "fifth guest" is the woman who called for Tom. She is considered a "guest" because she disrupted the dinner party in a significant way because she is the woman that Tom is having a relationship with outside his marraige. This shows us that Tom and Daisy have a corrupt marriage because Tom is having another relationship.

2. Daisy has a "cynical" view of female roles in society. When her daughter was born she said she "wept". She hopes that her daughter turns out a "fool". Tom has a role in her pesimistic paradigm because he has made Daisy feel miserable for being a woman by underminding her intellegence and cheating on her with another woman.

1.The fith guest is the woman that Tom is cheating with, that lives in New York. This shows that Tom and Daisy's marriage is just a big joke because he wasn't there when anything important was happening like the birth of his child, he dosn't care and she hates him.
2. This reflects her parenting skills by making her want her child to be a fool so that she does not have to feel the way that Daisy has been feeling all of her life. Tom makes her feel unimportant and and tries to make her feel small and stupid.

2. Daisy's cynical outlook on the world is reflected in her efforts as a parent. Daisy is always being put down by and being made to look stupid by her husband. becuase of this experience she is hoping that he daughter will be a fool so then she dosnt know what it is like to be intelligent and not be able to use it and show it. Daisy hopes her daughter is a fool so she dosnt end up in the same situation that she is in.

2) Daisy is very cynical about the world because of the way that she is treated. When she says that she hopes that her daughter is a fool she is trying to say that it would be better if she was dumb than smart because even if she was smart she would still have no power. Daisy knows this because she is an intelegent woman and she is shot down every day.

1. It is assumed that the “fifth guest” was the caller whom Tom rushed to speak with. From the moment Daisy goes to join her husband, we are told by Miss Baker that it is Tom’s mistress. It is a sad relationship that Daisy has to share with her husband as we learn, for she is put down by him and everyone-as Miss Baker makes known- knows that Tom is cheating on her.

2. Daisy wanted a boy. In her life she has had no control or power, thus she seeks it in her child. When learning that she had a daughter, Daisy wished that she would be, “a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful fool” The abusive nature of Tom was most likely a contributing factor to Daisy’s paradigm of her little girl. For Daisy, it must seem easier to be dumb and unknowing of how horrible a man can treat you, then to be intelligent and aware.

1.)The “fifth quest” that interrupted the party was the lady who Tom was having an affair with. This reveals that Tom and Daisy’s marriage is not a happy or truthful one at all.

2.)Daisy’s pessimism has been shown in her rising of the child by hoping that her child is a fool because she is not happy with her marriage and she doesn’t want her child to go through the same thing that she has with Tom and being in constant competition. Daisy’s marriage with Tom has affected this paradigm by constantly being but down when ever she tries to do something productive, which is why she would want a fool daughter so the daughter would never realize how bad her life could be.

Nick notes that the party was interrupted by a "fifth guest"(21). Who is this figurative person who disrupts the festivities? What does this reveal to us about the marriage of Tom and Daisy?

The figurative guest that disrupted the dinner party was Tom's mistress who called. This revels that Tom and Daisy are very private about their lives and not truely in love, as Tom is obviously cheating on Daisy. Also, Tom is in a competition for power with his wife and feels that for him to be the best and be a man, he has to put down his wife as often as possible and hurt her as much as he can. Their marriage is not pure and is full of lies, they are constantly fighting for power with each other, yet never admitt to have any problems in their relationship.

Daisy states that she is pretty "cynical" about the world around her (21). How has this pessimism been reflected in her efforts as a parent to her child? How would her marriage to Tom affect this paradigm?

Dasiy's "cynical" outlook on the world relates to how she parents her child as when she was born she burst into tears when she found out it was a girl. This is because she does not want her daughter to go though the unhappy and fake lifestyle like she has had to do. She knows that her child will have to compromise her happiness for the men in her life, and decides that she does not want to see her daughter go through that, therefore she sends her to her nanny most of time so that she can take care of her. The cynical outlook that Daisy possesses affects her relationship with her husband as she has excepted the fact that he is going to walk all over her and that she has no say in anything that goes on in the household, therefore she does not put forth any effort to the relationship making it fall apart.

1. Nick hinted at a “fifth person” who has interrupted the party to be the mistress who had irritated the festivities of the night. The reveals to the reader that the marriage between Daisy and Tom is a brittle and fragile one that is almost falling apart, both companies are despondent about this relationship.
2. This pessimism has imposed a belief that in this society it is a simpler struggle if woman were to be fool’s apposed to intellectual. Tom has helped draw Daisy’s idealism because he has enveloped a feeling of helplessness in her, and these feelings twisted Daisy’s outlook into pessimism.

1: When Nick admits the party was interrupted by a “fifth guest”, Tom had received a phone call during his cocktail party from his mistress who is in New York. Due to Tom having an affair with his mistress in New York it concludes to us that the marriage of Tom and Daisy is unhealthy and not trust worthy.

2: Due to the society Daisy is in she has created a "cynical" outlook on life. Consequently due to her outlook she chooses to ignore her child and would rather her daughter be a fool rather then intelligent. This is proven when she states “I hope she’ll be a fool” Daisy’s aspirations for her daughter are inspired by the society she lives in. Daisy believes it would be easier to be a fool then intelligent so that she would not understand that people are cheating, lying, and deceiving her.

The figurative person who disrupts the festive is the lady Tom is cheating on his wife with. In the middle of there party she calls and Tom rushes off to take the phone call without even considering how rude he is being and how much he embarrassed his wife. This shows that Tom and Daisy's marriage isn't really real. They try to pretend they are in love so they will fit in with the society but really it is complete disfunctional lie.

Daisy is "cynical" about the world around her, and this is having a major affect on her child. Daisy is a smart individual but because men have the upper hand in society she is treated like she is a complete idiot. Her "cycnical" views cause her to cry when first holding her child and hoping that she will not be intellegent so then she does not have to deal with the hardships life brings of being a intelectual woman.

1# Tom had hit myrtle and broke her nose. Few of the women at the party attended to her. It was early in the morning so some left including nick and Mr. McKee. This is a odd situation because instead of standing up and confronting tom about what he has done they attended to Myrtle and just carried on like nothing had happened.

2# Myrtle explained to the people at the party that her husband was not good enough for her. “I thought that he knew something about breading, but he was not fit enough to lick my shoe”. She expected him to be a gentle men and to attended to her but she realized that he was not what she thought he was. Because of this she decided that being with tom would be better because of his riches.

3# In this section we see the themes of gossip and scandal. “It is really his wife that is keeping them apart. She is a catholic , they don’t believe in divorce”.
So far everyone in the story that we have met learn every thing by gossip. This is why Toms friends believe this about his wife. This might not be true because they heard it thought the grape vine. Until the plot line changes this is how the story will stay.

1:The end of Tom and Myrtle’s party ended with blood shed. “Daisy, Daisy, Dai” with a short deft movement Tom Buchan broke her nose with his open hand.” This demonstrates Tom’s crave for control and supremacy of all others it also demonstrates that he is embarrassed by his past and wishes it to vanish. Abruptly trying to control his past and adopt fear and terror into his new community at the party, brakes Mrs. Wilson’s nose to silence the speak of his current wife to his mistress. Following this event Nick, and Mr. McKee flee the scene of the crime.

2: Myrtle’s a women not inheriting class and wealth finds justification for cheating on Sam when she states “ he borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in, and never even told me about it, and then the man came after it one day when he was out.” Myrtle believes that George was unfaithful first borrowing another man’s best suit in order to appear wealthy, and to be a “Gentleman”. Mrs. Wilson believed that George was part of a higher class society full of perks and fancy parties’. Later throughout her relationship she realized George was nothing of the sort and received no benefits and social invites which was her social dream. By cheating on her husband with Tom Buchannan she gains her social invites and wealth which was not inherited form the marriage to George.

3:
The novel develops many ideas about rumors and gossip and distrust. It reveals to us the idea that gossip develops in all types of society not only in the rich but the pour. For example, in the social hierarchy that Tom Buchanan falls into, everyone Tom knows rumors and gossip. For example at Tom and Daisy’s party the rumors that Tom has a mistress are developed strongly throughout the party. Tom’s friends and attendants all know about her but refuse to confront tom or Daisy about the problem. This reveals that all parts of society flow on rumors and lies which are the basis to conversation.

4:The theme of the poem “The City of Yes and No” is diversity and the dependants on it. In “The City of No”, everything is devious, sinister and “polished with bile”. Also in the “City of Yes and No” everyone is out to backstab and the lines “Every portrait looks out suspiciously” reveals this idea, because if you had nothing to be ashamed of there would nothing to look suspicious or threatened about. Something that can be learned is if you never let anyone take advantage of you or any of your assets you shall live a free and fearless life.. However, in “The City of Yes”, things are not that much better in the “City of Yes” where everything is given to you. Things would not seem much better for the reason that you would be much more naive and prone to be taken advantage of. Clearly diversity and the chance to take in knowledge and accomplish things for yourselves will create a much more diverse world.

5: This poem is related to the novel thus far because the poem describes how Nick lives his life. Nick’s family lives in the richer part of New York which can be related to “The city of no”. Which are people who spread deceit and rumors among the community. "A nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm" (35), this one of the horrible rumors that is sent around the higher class people. This is ironic because Mr. Gatsby has no connection to Kaiser Wilhelm nor did he receive any money from him and in fact fought for the American army. “the black town of No” The black town of No is the egg shaped peninsula that Nicks relatives live on. However, Nick lives in the City of Yes, “Only to tell the truth,” The people on Nick’s side of the egg are interesting and unlike the east egg. These people on the west peninsula believe in honor, dignity and truth. This is why Nick on his first impression of Mr. Gatsby has taken to him well and believes he is an uncynical individual. We know this when he agrees to accompany Mr. Gatsby on his hydroplane in the morning.

What I think the theme of the poem the city of yes and the city of no.
To me I think that it is trying to show use diversity or verity. Why I can say this is because the city of no seems to be evil and ugly. How one could say this is because in the poem you see it described as “polished with bile” with this being said it give you a mental picture of what the city just might look like. As in the city of yes things are not all as they seem because if you look close at the text you see that it is not all that great because you see that people are not that wiz because they could get taken advantage of you. In a kind world there are harsh problems. What I mean by this is even if the people are nice there can still be big problems and one that we see to day in our kind world is fraud. This what I think the people of the city of yes would experience. So I think for you to have a far chance you need not only to be kind but to knowledgeable and savvy.

How I think that the poem the city of yes and the city of no relates the book the great Gatsby is a few ways. One of the key whys that this is done is that Tom would fit perfectly in the city of no. Why I can say this is because tom would seem very egocentric and selfish and that is what the people of the city of no are like. Most people that tom partys with are along the same lines as him self.
But there is one man so far that we know about and that is George. This can be said because he seem not to have the big man syndrome as I like to call it how I can say this is because he dosnt seem to have the power in the relation ship and the fact that he just dose not care that much what other people real think of him. He would be more laded back and seems to roll with the punches. Tom seem to think that George is not a real mans man. You see this when it is said that “George bored a suit to get married in”. this would be people gossiping behind his back. There for I think that George would live in the city of yes because he seems to naive about the way he handles things.

Mikaela Response 4 and 5

4. The poem of the City of Yes and the City of No is choices. This poem tells us about two different "cities" or choices. This poem tells us os a person who is trying to find a blanace between two difficult choices. The theme of choice is seen in the quote "let my nerves be strained like wires between the city of yes and the city of no" this quote clearly shows us that This person is "strained" or having problems making the choice between the city of yes and the city of no.

5. The poem The city of Yes and the City of No can be related to the novel becuase the person in the poem is having to make a choice between the dark and the light. This is similar to the characters daisy and Gatsby. These two character as we can see are different from all the other characters in the novel so far. These characters are on the edge of what the poem calls the "City of yes and the city of No ". Gatsby and Diasy are different and finding it hard to stay pure and stay in the light rather then sinking into the dark and being like everyone else around them. The fake and gossip life that everyone lives is more exciting just like the city of No but a perfect life and pure life like the city of Yes is what people desire. Clearly the Poem and the novel are similar
